Cembra Pine

The Cembra Pine, also known as Swiss Pine, is a conifer native to Europe and is found mainly in the Alpine regions of southern France, Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria. It grows at elevations of up to approximately 2,000 meters, while in the Carpathian Mountains it can reach altitudes of up to 2,400 meters. Further occurrences can be found in northern Russia and Siberia.

Cembra Pine wood is highly versatile and is used for both interior and exterior applications. It is particularly valued for rustic furniture, high-quality interior fittings, wall and ceiling paneling, and decorative joinery work.

The heartwood is light reddish when freshly cut and darkens upon exposure to light and air. A distinctive feature of this wood is its numerous firmly embedded knots, which give it a highly decorative appearance.

Cembra Pine is easy to machine and can be planed, turned, and carved with excellent results. Drying is fast and causes little risk of checking or warping. Despite its high resin content, the wood readily accepts stains and finishes. Waxed surfaces are often preferred as they best enhance the natural character of the wood. Cembra Pine also glues well, and screws and nails provide strong, reliable joints.
